THE
CHALLENGE
What do librarians,
social workers and teachers have in common?
In today’s society,
each faces the very real prospect of being victimized by workplace
violence. In fact, a California OSHA study of workplace homicides
reveals that 30% of all reported incidents involve public service
professionals.
Librarians
face a special series of problems. No library science degree
prepares them for the range of people they encounter on a daily
basis or the multiple roles they must play -- roles that can often
be ambiguous, even dangerous. Public library patrons reflect a
microcosm of society: families, students, children working on
projects, as well as homeless people, stalkers, adults who lurk in
children’s areas and gangs of undisciplined youth. Today,
librarians often find themselves serving as protectors and enforcers
of discipline and on the receiving end of threats and harassment.
All without the tools or skills necessary to reduce potential
violence.
Most libraries are
reluctant to admit they have problems for fear of scaring away
patrons. But when an incident occurs, every employee and patron in
that facility -- not just the victim -- is affected.
What can you do to
secure your facility and protect staff and patrons? More...
